Korg OASYS User minnkorg was so kind to provide a MIDI file in Supertramp style. Several Wurlitzer sounds were recorded as they are using on board effects. There are HD-1, MOD-7 and KARO sounds for the OASYS versus Roland factory and SRX expansion sounds. Feel free to post any comments.

I have posted two Wurlitzer demos some time ago. But now with the MOD-7 Wurlitzer sound I thought it is of interest to add a demo file to compare these three sounds. The first two are sample based sounds using the HD-1 engine whereas the last is the MOD-7 version.
Exactly the same sequence was used with the same velocity curve, digital audio data transfer via OASYS lightpipe into MOTUs Digital Performer.

If you hear a crash after 32s then this is not in the recorded audio file… it probably was a bat crashing against the window of your studio when trying to localise its brother…. aliasing?

OASYS together with MOTU’s dp5.1, PSP’s Vintage Warmer and some UAD Plug Ins
There were always instruments that impressed me. Yamaha’s VL-series is one example, Korg’s Wavedrum another one. The latter I could not afford and unfortunately disappeared to fast from the market without finding a new home in my studio. Now it is no longer available… so in case you know someone who is willing to sell his Wavedrum.. please let me know.
Korg’s Wavedrum had unique sounds of which you can hear some on Eric Persing’s sound collections. The Wavedrum’s pad was of course half of the secret and I am afraid there is no real way to compensate that within OASYS. But the number of different controllers like the VJS together with velocity and aftertouch could make a different approach feasible. Anyway this is not the place for it and there is most likely much more necessary…
Together with Ebse I recorded the following track which consists of Korg sounds only. Not very surprising the drumloop is a Wavedrum sound and even less surprising everything else comes from Korg’s OASYS.

Why this demo?
I always like to make demo of new synths because lots of people love to listen to demos than sometimes do not come out quickly from manufacturers.
Demo Specs:
16 midi tracks used. You can see on the screenshot which patches i have used. I use the patterns to create different phrases for each sound. I have created 35 patterns for this one what is pretty low in fact and I could have made more variations and so more patterns but it’s not the purpose of this demo. I focused on the sounds, took the ones that really inspired me in the factory loaded bank, 12 MOD7 sounds + 4 drum tracks (HD1).

I have used 9 IFX slots (see screenshot) and all mFX/TFX slots. Concerning IFX you can see that is quite simple and the guitar sounds took almost half of the IFX used.
The complete demo took 25 - 30 hours.

I really like to work with Korg sequencer, beside the fact that of course some functions are lacking, but it’s quite simple, straigh forward, from my point of view, and you can achieve good songs quickly with it.
MOD7:
The sounds are really good and by using only one you can have several sounds ready because of the well programmed realtime controllers, especially the Vector JoyStick which I have used a lot in the sequencer.

Again, I have used only MOD-7 factory sounds with one exception. Starting at around 1:40 until around 2:20 you can hear a MS-20 solo sound. It is getting alive as soon as you start using Bender, Ribbon and Vector Joystick. Everything else is MOD-7 and can be found in the factory sounds. And again, everything is 100% OASYS and was played in a row without quantisation or anything else MIDI related.

Und hier noch ein kurzes Demo. Das Audiofile tut den beiden in der Ãœberschrift erwähnten Herren nicht einmal ansatzweise Genüge… sollten sie sich hier her verirren, so bitte ich Sie um Nachsicht.
In unten stehendem Audiofile geht es auch weniger um die musikalischen Fertigkeiten, sondern um die Reproduzierbarkeit “klassischer” FM sounds. Im deutschsprachigen Raum gibt es eine handvoll Namen die mit Yamaha’s FM Synthesizern in Verbindung gebracht werden. Im Unterschied zu anderen hat George Kochbeck in all den Jahren die Bodenhaftung nicht verloren und nimmt sich auch gerne einmal Zeit um Fragen zu beantworten. Wer mit diesem Namen nichts anfangen kann [Bildungslücke !!] sollte zumindest Googeln. Dabei sollten Sie auf Namen wie Eberhard Schoener oder Herwig Mitteregger stossen, genauso wie Ulla Meinecke oder gar Georgie Red… Sagt Ihnen alles nichts? Na dann versuchen Sie es vielleicht mit Monopalast, am besten dann, wenn deren Webseite wieder läuft. Im Falle von Edo Zanki sollten da aber dann schon eher die Glöckchen läuten, oder? Gut. Sei es wie es sei… eigentlich wollte ich hier ein kurzes Audiodemo präsentieren, bevor es aber so weit ist noch ein paar Worte.
Eigentlich.. eigentlich wollte ich kein E-Piano mehr programmieren, als ich dann aber feststellen musste, dass meine in 15 Minuten erstellte GS-1 Version nur sehr entfernt an das Original heranreichte, beschloss ich am entsprechenden Sound ein wenig mehr herumzutüfteln. Gesagt, getan. Während des “Schraubens” überkamen mich jedoch Zweifel ob der Sinnhaftigkeit dieses Unterfangens, denn was um alles in der Welt macht man mit einem Sound der an ein derart bekanntes Original heranreicht? Ihn Bekannten vorspielen? Oder gar OASYS Interessenten? Zudem schreiben wir das Jahr 2oo7… wie auch immer so nebenher drehte ich ein wenig da, änderte die Velocity dort, sprich die Zeit plätscherte dahin und am Ende gab es einen E-Pianosound mit “Charakter”. Sie wollen wissen was ich darunter verstehe? Hmm, gar nicht so leicht zu erklären… gemeint ist damit, der Sound sollte unverkennbar und vor allem sehr dynamisch zu spielen sein.
Aber um wieder auf George zu sprechen zu kommen, seine Art und Weise Keyboard zu spielen hat mich einige schlaflose Nächte und viele Stunden des Ãœbens und Soundtüftelns gekostet. Das Ergebnis das Sie hier gleich hören werden reicht natürlich nicht an das Original, schon alleine weil die Art und Weise wie jeder einzelne Ton gespielt wird entscheidendes zur Wahrnehmung beiträgt… aber immerhin, der Basssound ist meines Erachtens weich und rund.
80ies FM
Der darunter liegende E-Piano Klang soll zeigen wie sehr sich der Klang durch die Dynamik verändert, hier ein bisserl Glöckchen, dort ein wenig Röcheln… ob man damit aktuelle Musik machen kann? Radio Eriwan antwortet: Im Prinzip ja, aber…. genau so alt wie diese Antwort sind vermutlich die Sounds und dennoch, Fender und Wurlitzer sind noch älter und erfreuen sich ebenfalls bester Gesundheit. Was jetzt aber nicht heissen soll, dass all die tausenden von DX sounds wiederbelebt werden sollen die zwar in den 80ern ihre Daseinsberechtigung hatten, aber heute eigentlich im besten Falle einem ein Schmunzeln abringen. Allerdings… etwa ein Dutzend dieser alten Sounds werden in der Combination USER BANK A meines OASYS’ ihr neues zu Hause finden.
Es versteht sich von selbst, das alles was Sie hören aus dem OASYS stammt… die Klänge ebenso wie der Hall sowie die anderen verwendeten Effekte. Die Aufnahmekette ist Lesern dieses Blogs bekannt und bedarf daher keiner weiteren Wiederholung .

I did not play exactly what he was asking for, sorry…. But one should get an idea about the sound. Some of the chords I hit more then once and varied velocity as otherwise this would not tell you anything about the dynamics, only about the decay which you can hear in the demo as well:
