Wurlitzer comparison - Update

Posted in MOD-7, Audio Demos by blogasys

I have posted two Wurlitzer demos some time ago. But now with the MOD-7 Wurlitzer sound I thought it is of interest to add a demo file to compare these three sounds. The first two are sample based sounds using the HD-1 engine whereas the last is the MOD-7 version.

Exactly the same sequence was used with the same velocity curve, digital audio data transfer via OASYS lightpipe into MOTUs Digital Performer.

OASYS factory sound D080

KARO Wurlitzer sound 001 for OASYS

OASYS Combination using two MOD-7 sounds. First loop is dry, second is with the same EFX settings as found in KARO’s Wurlitzer sound 001

Now all three in a row with the same EFXs. First factory sound D080, followed by KARO’s sound 001 and last but not least MOD-7 combination:

RC’s MOD-7 Demo

Posted in MOD-7, Audio Demos by blogasys

Maybe you listened to some of my MOD-7 demos. Don’t be afraid, there are no more coming!

Now it is RC’s turn.

Richard Courtel
Richard Courtel aka RC

RC-Mod7-Demo.mp3

Why this demo?

I always like to make demo of new synths because lots of people love to listen to demos than sometimes do not come out quickly from manufacturers.

RC's_OASYS

Demo Specs:

16 midi tracks used. You can see on the screenshot which patches i have used. I use the patterns to create different phrases for each sound. I have created 35 patterns for this one what is pretty low in fact and I could have made more variations and so more patterns but it’s not the purpose of this demo. I focused on the sounds, took the ones that really inspired me in the factory loaded bank, 12 MOD7 sounds + 4 drum tracks (HD1).

MOD-7_sounds

I have used 9 IFX slots (see screenshot) and all mFX/TFX slots. Concerning IFX you can see that is quite simple and the guitar sounds took almost half of the IFX used.

The complete demo took 25 - 30 hours.

IFX

I really like to work with Korg sequencer, beside the fact that of course some functions are lacking, but it’s quite simple, straigh forward, from my point of view, and you can achieve good songs quickly with it.

MOD7:

The sounds are really good and by using only one you can have several sounds ready because of the well programmed realtime controllers, especially the Vector JoyStick which I have used a lot in the sequencer.

If any one has questions about this demo, I will answer of course!

Thank you for listening ;-)

guess what… another MOD-7 audio demo

Posted in MOD-7, Audio Demos by blogasys

golden_h2o

Again, I have used only MOD-7 factory sounds with one exception. Starting at around 1:40 until around 2:20 you can hear a MS-20 solo sound. It is getting alive as soon as you start using Bender, Ribbon and Vector Joystick. Everything else is MOD-7 and can be found in the factory sounds. And again, everything is 100% OASYS and was played in a row without quantisation or anything else MIDI related.

MOD-7 demo IV

Addendum:
sounds used
- When a Robot Dreams (Intro)
- Beyond the Clouds (pad playing the harmonies, changed a little bit the EQ for the lower frequencies)
- Lost in an Ion Storm & Convergence (salt & pepper sounds)
- Double Plucked (PPG like sound)
- iRandom pmm solo (MS-20 engine)

80ies FM oder “Kochbeck meets Zanki”

Posted in MOD-7, Audio Demos by blogasys

Sina's_chords

At korgforums.com OASYAN Sina172 asked for another demo with straight chords. Find his posting in this thread.

I did not play exactly what he was asking for, sorry…. But one should get an idea about the sound. Some of the chords I hit more then once and varied velocity as otherwise this would not tell you anything about the dynamics, only about the decay which you can hear in the demo as well:

MOD-7 sound demo

Posted in MOD-7, Audio Demos by blogasys

Yamaha GS-1 Once worth ATS 285.000.- (equals to € 20.700.-), Yamaha’s GS-1

In a way it is Sina172’s fault, as he was asking “How can you get smoooother EP’s? Can someone fill me in here? I want those EP’s to sound like Pads that are really lush and warm. I KNOW this is possible but I need a run down.”

Thus I decided to make a short Audio-Demo to show how easy it is to get these kind of sounds. But you know how life sometimes is…. at the end you get somehting completely different.

I was looking for one of the many typical DX Piano sounds which are coming together with the two additional Program banks. So I stepped thru them and “oops” ?? What was that, this characteristic “stertorousness” reminded me on something lying back a long, long time. Some editing here, for example I put the ratio of all Oscs to 1, some editing there and suddenly I had this sound:

“Taenzerin”

Ok.. no doubt, it is lacking the wooden character of the original, Attack and Decay need some further editing to get a stronger E-Piano Attack phase and Volumes together with Velocity should be modified as well… not to mention the usage of the internal EQ. But you won’t believe how long it took to get this sound. The whole recording process with changing the Sample Rate to 44.1kHz, converting to an .mp3 copying it on the USB stick bringing it upstairs to the Mac I am writing, loading the stick, uploading the audio file took much longer then to get to this sound.

But I have to apologize, as MOD-7 is capable of much more then “just” E-Pianos.

TX-816 vs. MOD-7

Posted in MOD-7, Audio Demos, News - e/g by blogasys

TX-816_pmm Eight TF-1 moduls made Yamaha’s TX-816 to one of the strongest FM synthesizers

Thanks to Kevin Nolan who made 200.000 DX sounds available on the net I could load some of my favourite TX-816 sounds into OASYS and use the new EXi “MOD-7″ for recreating good old Yamaha DX sounds.

You did not download the sounds from Kevin’s website? Ah… this means you did not read the short note here at the blog… mmm.. anyway, click here to get to his page.

Not very surprisingly I was interested in the difference between the new MOD-7 and the “old” TX-816. Tough luck for me, as one of the moduls broke and thus I only had a TX-716 for comparison. But anyway, I loaded the SYSEX sounds into two program banks of OASYS and put eight of them together in one combination.

Eight? Yes eight! But for this comparison I muted slot #4 in the combination as this is the corresponding sound to the broken FM sound in modul #4 of the TX-816.

I designed two different versions of the combination. Number 1 consists just of the eight TX programs and the second Combi got the “analog” touch of a digital machine. You are asking yourself what I am talking about? I detuned the eight programs slightly to each other and used some ms of delay for some of the programs.

Therefore you can listen to three different audiofiles, two of them are OASYS MOD-7 combinations and one is the original TX-”8″16, which was mixed with a Soundcraft M12 rack mixer. The L/R Output was connected to my two Avalon U5s… but as a regular visitor of this blog you know the remaining recording chain.

I used the same MIDI sequence and no internal or external effects, no EQing, no compression no mastering.
